Reliability & Resilience

At PNM, reliability is more than a word. It’s the foundation for everything we do.

Over half a million customers depend on us for power, and we’re committed to delivering safe, reliable electricity. We are constantly investing in critical infrastructure and performing regular maintenance to ensure we can provide customers with the same high level of electric reliability that you are accustomed to because we know your business depends on it.

New Mexico enjoys a temperate climate with very few extreme weather and natural disaster events, which helps PNM maintain high electric reliability

While seasonal disruptive events such as high winds and moderate snow do occur, they generally do not pose the long-term outage risks as catastrophic events like hurricanes and earthquakes

This low risk profile, coupled with our constant investment in critical infrastructure, results in our consistently high reliability scores.

We measure our reliability and benchmark our performance against other utilities using industry-standard reliability metrics, which are presented below.

System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI)

The System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI) refers to how often the average customer experiences a sustained outage over a predefined period of time.

A Commitment to a Sustainable Energy Future

At PNM, we know that a renewable energy future isn’t just the right choice for our environment, it’s also what our customers want. As more companies adopt sustainability goals and make renewable energy commitments,  demand for renewable energy will continue to increase in the coming years. New Mexico’s groundbreaking Energy Transition Act mandates that the state’s utilities be 100% emissions-free by 2045. PNM has committed to meeting this goal five years ahead of schedule and was the first U.S. electric utility to present our path to a carbon-free future. Already today we produce, on average, 30% of our energy from renewable sources.

When combining the energy produced from all renewable sources, PNM produces enough electricity to power over 174,000 New Mexico homes every day. 18 solar centers produce enough energy to power 60,000 homes when the sun is shining.

Our wind, solar and geothermal power generation save 400 million gallons of water every year. The total reduced air emissions is equivalent to taking 201,000 cars off New Mexico’s roads.

MILLION INVESTMENT

$270 million investment in 1 million solar panels helped land New Mexico in the top 10 states for solar installations.

The Renewable Energy 100 (RE100) organization is made up of companies that have committed to being powered 100% by renewables by 2050. Membership in this organization has tripled in the last five years and now stands at more than 300 members. These companies account for over 300 TWh of consumption annually, and 42% of this already comes from renewable power. What’s driving this trend? 99% are on this path to satisfy corporate responsibility objectives and do their part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 92% report that customers are demanding they do so, and over 80% see it as critical to managing their own long-term risks. Over two-thirds (68%) see this as a path to lowering costs and improving their bottom lines.

New Mexico Produces More Renewable Energy for Less

Plentiful wind and 310 days of sunshine a year in New Mexico ensure that we can help you achieve your renewable energy goals at some of the lowest costs in the U.S. Only three states have higher proportions of renewables than New Mexico while not simultaneously having higher costs.
